“Artists must never shrink from a confrontation with society or the state…”
Michael Leunig
I was recently fortunate enough to be gifted a book of cartoons from the Melbourne artist, Michael Leunig. It is a great collection of his works. Leunig is quintessentially Australian. He was born in East Melbourne and educated at Footscray North Primary School and Maribyrmong High School. He failed Year 12 twice. His first paying job was as a labourer in an abattoir. He was conscripted into the Vietnam war, but became a conscientious objector. Leunig enrolled at Swinbourne Film and Television School, eventually ending up a cartoonist for the Fairfax Media newspapers. His drawings are sparse with a quivering line, usually in black and white with ink wash. His images and themes mine the depths of human doubt, frailty, ambiguity, despair, compassion and hope. I love them. #thanksmikeandsophie #letsmakelemonade
