Counting sheep

“Rise and rise again until the lambs become lions…”

Robin Hood

I recently spent a morning photographing deserted buildings in Port Adelaide. Many of them relate to the wool industry. In the late 19th to mid 20th century, this was a huge business for South Australia. We rode on the sheep’s back. The Port and regional centres such as Wallaroo, exported vast quantities of local wool to rest of the world. By the 1950s and 60s , the two big players in this space were Elders and Dalgety. It was Coke versus Pepsi, but for sheep. Before she married, my mother was the private secretary for the SA General Manager of Dalgety. She had plenty of stories to tell. It was Mad Men with bales of wool. It is sad to see these buildings in such disrepair. Their fate seems to be either demolition or transformation into trendy apartments. #sheepwars #letsmakelemonade
