Where history meets the modern

“A doctor can bury his mistakes, but an architect can only recommend his clients plant vines…”

Frank Lloyd Wright

This is one of my favourite pieces of architecture in Adelaide. It is worth the detour as they say. The church we see here is Pilgrim Uniting, right in the heart of the CBD. It’s foundation stone was laid in 1850. The style is Gothic Revival. The original architect was Henry Stuckey, but after his death in 1851, the project was completed by the renown Edmund Wright. The stone was quarried in Glen Osmond. It is home of the largest organ in South Australia. For buildings of this quality and importance to endure and survive, we must innovate and make a few compromises. Demolition is too easy when developing. Here the solution is thoughtful, elegant and rather cute. Lift up the first floor of the brutalist modern City of Adelaide building on elegant arch supports and let the church tuck safely under. Both buildings overlap and interact, but maintain their dignity and independence. #modernistadelaide #letsmakelemonade
