All that brutal beauty

“Form Evers follows function…”

Louis Sullivan

Brutalist architecture is a style that emerged during the 1950s, largely in the UK. It refers to minimalist constructions that showcase bare building materials and structural elements over decorative design. Common is the use of exposed unpainted concrete, angular geometric shapes and a monochrome palette of colours. Brutalism is polarising. Are these structures cold and soulless, or heroic and bold? Adelaide has a surprising number of these buildings from the 1970s, often public and institutional in nature. They are moody and can be a bit oppressive, however from the right angle in a certain light they can make a powerful impact. Here one of my favourites, Western Hospital at Henley Beach. #that70slook #letsmakelemonade
