“I have done my share, it is time to go elegantly…”
Albert Einstein
Many of will have noticed a recent post about Einstein and Uranus. I was actually researching this topic, when I became sidelined by the link between the scientist and my favourite planet. In 1995 my father in law Peter, was lucky enough to survive a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. It turns out he was in esteemed company. In 1948 Albert Einstein began to have back and abdominal pain. New York surgeon, Dr Rudolph Nissen (he of fundoplication fame), diagnosed a stretching AAA. This was nearly always fatal. Nissen choose to perform a fledgling procedure. At laparotomy he wrapped the legendary scientist’s AAA in cellophane. The resulting tissue reaction and fibrosis acting to support the weakened blood vessel. The iconic photo of Einstein we see above, was taken as he was driven home from hospital. All was well until 1955, when the great man collapsed with further pain. Einstein was clever enough to know the score and declined further surgery. #wisedecisiontwice #letsmakelemonade
