Canis lupus dingo?

“The dog lives for the day, the hour, even the moment…”

This is Scout. For nearly 12 years this neurotic, loyal, naughty and loveable creature has been part of our family. She was a rescue dog from Darwin in the Northern Territory. Her original name was Yumi, which is Japanese in origin, meaning beautiful saviour. This turns out to be a tricky name to yell out in public streets and parks. So she became Scout, Ellie’s favourite character from to Kill a Mockingbird. The question always hanging over Scout is whether she is part dingo? The relationship between Australia and dingoes is complex. The earliest dingo remains/DNA in this country date back 3450 years. Their origin story is a disputed hot mess. They are officially considered a native animal. Worryingly for Scout, in South Australia they are also gazetted as wild dogs. This allows fencing, baiting and shooting to control numbers and protect sheep holdings. Tellingly, the dingo is a solitary creature and has never been domesticated. In this regard, Scout shows no signs of being a dingo. #probablyjustakelpie #letsmakelemonade
