Cats and snakes, eyes and slits

“Snake eyes on the paradise…”

April Sun in Cuba, Dragon

This remarkable pencil sketch is a recent work of my clever wife. Annoyingly, she is better at these things than me, but I do paint and draw with a greater sense of gusto. These eyes are really engaging, but raise the issue of why cat pupils are slit shaped. In mammals, slit pupils are unique to cats. If you have sensitive retina and hunt prey at night, you are likely to have poor vision in the glare of day. Slit pupils close tightly, yet can peel back to open wide, giving a broad range of vision with preserved depth of field during day and night. Interesting lions and tigers which hunt during the day, have round pupils. The only other creature with slit pupils is my old friend the snake, but again only those that hunt at night. #lyricsbymarchunter #letsmakelemonade
