“Anatomy is destiny…”
Sigmund Freud
Many of us will have strong, if not happy memories of the struggle to take notes during lectures. During my time at medical school there were frequent groans of despair and frustration as the overhead projector sheets were flipped over. Yes, I am that old. Most of this has changed with the ability to access PowerPoint files. Things were completely different in the 1800s. All those engaged in natural philosophy or scientific endeavours were likely to possess a high level of illustrative ability and usually were a literal dab hand at watercolours. This is a sketch from a first year medical students anatomy lecture notebook. It was produced during a course on anatomical dissection by Professor Alexander Munro, delivered at Edinburgh University in 1801. In total the notebook contains 480 such drawings. #offtothephotocopier #letsmakelemonade
