The place where pen and paint meet

“Man’s beauty is in his writing…”

Japanese saying

These are Nara bushes, the traditional tool for Japanese calligraphy. In 806 Kuhai was the most famous calligrapher in Japan. He had learnt most of his skills on a trip to China, and upon returning to his homeland began to champion the concept of writing as a high end art form. Kuhai needed high quality, very specific tools. A man called Kiyokawa was engaged to craft the first Japanese calligraphy instruments from goat hair and bamboo, now known as Nara brushes. Their design remains unchanged into the 21st century. To me these are the perfect collision of my interests in writing, pens, painting and brushes. Nara were introduced for writing, but now are almost exclusively used for watercolour painting. With their controlled pigment release and the ability to store volumes of ink within in their bristles, they can be considered the ancestor of the fountain pen. #anotherrabbithole #letsmakelemomade
