Blurring the boundaries

“The earth is art, the photographer is only the witness…”

Yann Arthus Bertrand

We all take photographs. Our phones have some of the most powerful and clever camera systems ever devised, but do we end up with truly great images? Sometimes less is more and slowing things down is important. This may well apply to photography. Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer and architect. He is known for his beautifully composed, atmospheric photographs. Animals, the sea, cinemas and architecture are his favourite subjects. Extremely long exposures (often several hours) give a surreal, timeless quality to his work. Remarkably, all his work is captured with a 19th century, wooden box camera with large format glass photo plates. Sugimoto refers to his camera as a time machine. Maybe we are missing something with our iPhones. #evengreatphotographerslikeselfies #letsmakelemonade
