Good surgery is no longer just about human skill, knowledge and judgement. Yes, still need all that, but in 2023 we are in partnership with technology. For those with breast cancer, one of the key pieces of information is tumour involvement of their axillary lymph nodes. This is a first generation Gammasonics lymphoscintigraphy probe. Basically a directional Geiger counter, to locate nuclear labelled sentinel lymph nodes during surgery. In the hands of the Breast Surgeons at Western Hospital it has served for several decades. It was originally purchased with funds raised by local community breast cancer groups. This probe still functions, but it components are obsolete and it is beyond the point of repair. In terms of a piece of operating theatre technology it has had remarkable longevity. As we farewell it, I can only reflect on the thousands of people it has helped during their breast cancer journey. #welldoneandthankyou #letsmakelemonade
