The woman behind the man

“Columns of figures of figures can be balanced, but a Kandinsky is wonderful…”

Solomon R Guggenheim

One of my key art memories is visiting the Guggenheim museum in New York. I’m excited that a trip to the Guggenheim in Bilbao is coming up in the next few weeks. Visiting a Guggenheim museum is an intoxicating combination of high end architecture and art. The architecture is straightforward. Lloyd-Wright designed the New York building, Gehry the Basque. So who was the mastermind behind the art? Hilda Rebay was a German born painter. She worked in the new genre of futuristic, non-objective, abstract art. By 1927 she was based in New York, and received a commission to produce a portrait of Solomon R Guggenheim . He was obviously impressed. Guggenheim engaged Rebay to travel the world with him as his art advisor. She was the one who envisioned a museum-temple to display his collection. In 1943 she chose Frank Lloyd-Wright to design the iconic building on the western side of Central Park. Guggenheim passed in 1949, but Hilda Rebay pushed the project through to its opening in 1959. #greathat #letsmakelemonade
