“If you don”t like bacteria, you’re on the wrong planet…”
Stewart Brand
Recently I blogged about Sir Alexander Fleming and the discovery of penicillin. I consider that a scalpel post. This is a paint post about the same person. Alexander Fleming was a keen watercolourist and member of the Chelsea Arts Club. Sadly, his work was considered amateurish and a disappointment. Not to be deterred, he turned his hand to microbe art. Pieces produced on a Petri dish, using bacteria of specifically chosen colours. Such was the impact of these works, Fleming held a private exhibition for Queen Mary. Fleming also founded the British Microbiological Art Association, becoming its inaugural President. The BMAA not longer exists, but Fleming’s vision lives in the American Society for Microbiology’s annual ASM Agar Art Contest. #passthepetridish #letsmakelemonade
