I have previously been pretty nerdy discussing saturation, hue, shading and sheen in relation to watercolour paints and fountain pen inks. So here is an another one. Granulation is the clustering of pigment particles leading to an uneven dispersion over the paper or canvas. It causes the paint layer to look textured or mottled. Modern paints generally contain synthetic organic pigments, which have uniform size, providing qualities such a as durability, non-toxicity and light fastness. It is the more traditional, often unstable, inorganic pigments with highly variable particle size that are more likely to granulate. Ultramarine blue springs to mind. In oil and acrylic paints granulation is seldom seen, but in watercolour it can be highly desirable, and paints can be manufactured specifically to achieve it. This is Cass Arts granulating Sage Green. It was acquired on unplanned stopover in Glasgow, after the UK rail lines flooded. #itgranulatesandsheens #letsmakelemonade
