The dark side of fountain pens

“Cheat me in the price, but not in the goods…”

Thomas Fuller

Fountain pen people seem pretty benign, but you don’t want to mess with us. There has been drama in the pen community, at least enough to make the pages of the New York Times. One of the most popular ever fountain inks was produced in 2016 by German pen company, LAMY. It was a limited edition ink called Dark Lilac. The golden sheen was the thing that captured our hearts and has meant that bottles go for hundreds of dollars on the second hand market. A few weeks ago LAMY announced the rerelease of the beloved Dark Lilac. Even better, it was becoming a part of the permanent ink collection. All rejoiced. Sadly, side by side comparisons revealed that the new ink had a greener sheen. They were not the same. The LAMY CEO then admitted that not all the components of the original ink were still available, a new formulation had been created. He was was confidence that nobody would notice a real difference. Fast forward a few days from that and the CEO has a new job, and LAMY has been takenover by the Mitsubishi Pen Company of Japan. #youcanseethedifferenceright #letsmakelemonade
