地震 jishin, Earth shake

“An earthquake reminds us that we live on an unfinished planet…”

Charles Kuralt

This is the flagship of my fountain pen collection. It is a Nakaya Dorsal Fin 2 Urushi Aka-Tamenuri. Nakaya is a small pen maker based in the town of Wajima, on the Noto Peninsula of Japan. Wajima is a key hub for the artesan industry of Urushi lacquerware. Nakaya employs semi retired Urusji masters, most well over the age of 90. On January 1st 2024, the Noto Peninsula was struck with a magnitude 7.5 earthquake. Many were killed, many were injured, many were rendered homeless, many businesses and local infrastructures were destroyed. All Nakaya staff are safe, but it is far from clear whether they will have the resolve, energy. desire and resources to rebuild their business. Catastrophic events are reported and measured in lives, suffering and destruction of buildings. They also inflict an almost immeasurable, almost imperceptible damage upon the smaller details of culture and community. #lastofthenakayas? #letsmakelemonade
