In its simplest form, Sumi ink is one of the oldest art materials. Soot from the open fire mixed into a paste with water. It’s what we painted cave walls with. It has become popular as a Japanese product in modern times, but was first employed as to make art on paper around 3000 years ago in China. Sumi-e is a fascinating art form, full of tradition and style. The Sumi ink gives a distinct jet black which starkly contrast to the unadorned background of rice paper. The painting technique employs a brush to impart simple gestural marks, historically capturing symbolic images from nature. In 2024 the boundaries of this art have been stretched and redesigned, but there is still an impact to work in this style. #ofcouseiaddedblue #letsmakelemonade
