Both surgery and art can be complicated

“I don’t paint things. I paint the difference between things…”

Henri Matisse

I like the art of Henri Matisse. Alongside Picasso, he was highly influential in changing the trajectory of art in the early decades of the 20th century. In fact surgery had an impact on the trajectory and career of Matisse himself. Originally he was a lawyer. He only started painting during a long period of convalescence after an episode of appendicitis in 1889. Later in life during 1941, Henri had a major abdominal surgery for malignancy. His laparotomy wound became infected and he has a significant fascial dehiscence. As often happens, a massive loss of domain incisional hernia developed. Despite being unable to stand and being forced to remain supine in bed, Matisse refused further surgery. From his bed he began to cut coloured paper into pieces with scissors. The resultant collages are referred to as Matisse’s cut outs. They are some of his most sought after and exhibited pieces of work. #lagerbe1953 #letsmakelemonade
