“Cemeteries are full of indispensable men…”
Charles De Gaulle
So recently I went sketching in the West Terrace Cemetery with the Adelaide Urban Sketchers. I went for a bit of a wander. This tombstone caught my eye. No dates, no real information, no context. Just a name and an occupation. So I did a little research. This is plot 89, area S1, grid A9, in the Old Catholic Section. There are in fact two women buried at this location. The first is Mary McBride, buried on 12th October 1880. The second is Mary Crowe. The date that Mary C was interred into what was an originally an unmarked grave is not recorded. She did have friends, colleagues or family that were able to raise funds for this simple, yet powerful headstone. The Adelaide Hospital became Royal in 1939, so she died between 1880 and that date. Most likely closer to the former. There are plenty of elaborate graves in this cemetery, but this simple memorial has served the purpose of reincarnating Mary Crowe’s memory into the digital, internet age of 2024. Sometimes simple works best. #thisishowpodcastsstart #letsmakelemonade
