One of the true heroes of Wimbledon

“Tinnitus. the kettle going off in the next room…”

This time of the year Wimbledon attracts a lot of great and famous people, some are even tennis players. So what do you have to do to get a fountain in your honour? Well the answer is be a surgeon. This functional drinking fountain in the Wimbledon high street celebrates Dr Joseph Toynbee (30/12/1815 – 7/71866). Dr Toynbee was a London surgeon who pioneered the specialty of Otology. He was a renown anatomist, establishing many key facts about the Eustachian tubes and tympanic membranes. He was one of the first to perform a tympanoplasty. The Toynbee manoeuvre (forced expiration against pinched nostrils) is closely related to the Valsalva manoeuvre, and a method of equalising middle ear pressure. Sadly, Toynbee died too young in slightly mysterious circumstances whilst conducting experiments with Prussic acid and chloroform as a remedy for tinnitus. Joseph Toynbee was a long term resident of Wimbledon. #surgeontennistinnitusandprussicacid #letsmakelemonade
