’The great advantage of a hotel is the refuge from home life…”
George Bernard Shaw
I feel cheated. For some years a group of my medical colleagues has gathered every month of so for a casual dinner. A favourite venue has been the atmospheric and apparently historic Rising Sun Hotel, located in Bridge Street Kensington. Recently Penny and I were in Kensington, stretching our legs on a winter morning walk. As we strolled down Bridge Street I was stunned to encounter the above building, clearly marking Rising Sun Hotel. Immediately I did my research. This was the original site of the Rising Sun Hotel, being built and opened in 1882. It was one of the most luxurious pubs in Adelaide, boasting over 34 guest rooms and a high end dining room. Sadly, introduction of electric trams in 1909 along the Norwood Parade, bypassed the main streets of Kensington. The original hotel was closed within a decade. The pub we visit is a 19th century residence, renovated and repurposed in the 1980s. #historyisrewrittenbythevictors #letsmakelemonade
