Influential Australian art

“The purpose of art is to wash the dust off the soul…”

Pablo Picasso

The Australian Newspaper recently marked its 60th anniversary by naming the 60 most influential Australians of this era. Brett Whitley was on the list. It is interesting that Whiteley still has impact 32 years after his death. That is not typical for an Australian artist. Controversial imagery, a bohemian lifestyle, drug addiction, a flamboyant wife, that hair and an early grave have all added to the legend and the lasting impact of his career. Paradoxically, despite his work being filled with uniquely Australian subject matter, Whiteley has genuine international recognition. Put simply, Whitley is Lavender Bay. Lavender Bay is Sydney Harbour. Sydney Harbour is Sydney. Sydney is Australia. Brett Whitley travelled, lived, studied and worked throughout the world, but returned home to produce his most iconic images. Let’s say he had remained in New York, a place where he spent several years. Would his art to so linked to Australia? Indeed how influential would he be considered on an international level. Potentially he would be amongst the greatest of post modern artists. #stillcallaustraliahome #letsmakelmonade
