“My spelling is wobbly. The letters get in the wrong places…”
AA Milne
Should you choose to search the internet for certain words, say haematology, leukaemia or anaemia, you face a few challenges. The major problem will be your spelling. Autocorrect will not be happy with your aes for insistence. Where did it all go wrong. The spelling of most British English was cemented by Samuel Johnson in his 40,000 word 1755 publication, A Dictionary of the English Language. No long after in 1808 Norah Webster published his brillantly named tome, A Compendious Dictionary of the English, with over 70,000 words. Bigger is better and the USA adopted Websters book and subsequent editions as gospel. In general the American approach to spelling was less is more. Ae became e, and ou became o, but sometimes letters were just changed, s to z and c to s. I suspect the explosion of AI generated text will seal the fate of Dr Johnson’s 8 years of selfless endeavour. #runthespellchecker #letsmakelemonade
