“A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can leave alone…”
Henry David Thoreau
You certainly know this image. You likely know who drew it. You might know the name of the work. I doubt you know the man behind the name. Vitruvius was a first century Roman architect. His publication, De Architectura, is recognised as the first book solely devoted to architectural theory. Vitruvius stated that buildings needed three key attributes, firmitas, utilitas and venustas… strength, utility and beauty. Most manuscripts of this era were a ramble through the author’s thoughts, ideas and philosophies. Vitruvius was no exception. His discussion of perfect proportion in architecture, included references to his ideal of the human form. Leonardo da Vinci put great stock in the work of Vitruvius and during the Florentine Renaissance produced his iconic image of the Vitruvian Man. #iamnottallenough #letsmakelemonade
