“What Shakespeare is to drama, Bernini is to marble…”

Cardinal Scipore Borghese

This is an amazing piece of art. It is work by arguably the most gifted sculptor of marble. This is big call, particularly as I am writing this post in the middle of Florence, but it is a personal favourite in a sea of amazing contenders. Gian Lorenzo Bernini carved this masterpiece, The Martydom of St Lawrence, around 1613. To me it is outstanding for two key reasons. Firstly, the exceptional detail. Look at the great saphenous vein in the leg and the cephalic vein in the arm. Both are exactly in the right place, ready for a high tie and strip or the insertion of a therapeutic cannula. The second impressive thing? Bernini produced this sculpture at age 15. #uffitzimagic #letsmakelemonade
