Let’s imagine that humankind decided to launch a program to discover a new planet. The budget would be billions, if not trillions. Massive infrastructure would be needed. Multinational public and private partnerships would be negotiated. There would be controversy, false starts and outright protests. During the spring evenings of 1609, Galileo Galilei stood at the top windows of this Florentine house. Using a simple, single chamber telescope, with two lens he ground himself, Galileo made the observations that led to the discovery of Jupiter.
