“A thin membrane containing a considerable quantity of elastic orange fibres…”
Antonio Scarpa
I like to ask questions. By nature of my work, I like ask questions about the axilla. It is extraordinary to see the terror induced in medical students by the simple question, what is your favourite anatomical fact about the axilla? I recently had the good fortune to encounter in person this amazing image from Antonio Scarpa’s indescribably beautiful textbook of anatomy from the 1700s. Yes it is the axilla. This is the same Scarpa who described the components of the deep facial layer of the abdominal wall. Novice appendicectomists need to heed his observations carefully. Mistake Scarpa’s fascia for the deeper external oblique aponeurosis, and merriment, mayhem and disaster can ensue. #drawingsbeyonddescription #letsmakelemonade
