State heritage, my heritage

Former Tubemakers Administration Buildings ( No.2), 494-502 Churchill Road, Kilburn

State heritage listing 26303

Until the mid-1930s all steel tubing was imported into Australia.  As secondary industries expanded there became a need for Australia to manufacture its own. In 1938 Tube Investments (UK) announced they would set up a factory at Kilburn to produce tubular steel. Built in 1939 and extended in 1940-42, Building No. 2 provided administration facilities for the Directors, Management and Staff of British Tube Mills (later Tubemakers). This site, along with neighbouring industries, provided essential materials for World War Two. The building is architecturally significant for being a well executed industrial office in the modern functional or international style. It is asymmetrical, with curved brick walls and ribbon windows that intersect with more massive cubic forms. The structure is well balanced with strong but well proportioned horizontal lines. It is also the workplace that my father entered as a payroll officer, after completing year 12 at age 17 years. It was also the building that my father retired from over 45 years later. #everybuildinghasahistory #letsmakelemonade
