“The day you first go to Venice will be unlike any other in your life…”
E temple Thurston
Unsurprisingly, the Grand Canal is the largest channel in Venice. It is a serpentine water corridor that connects the lagoon near Saint Lucia Station to the Basin in the famous district of San Marco. For most visitors it is the first view they will have of this legendary city. It is lined by breathtaking architecture and spanned by stunning bridges, including famous Rialto. It has been painted by anyone that had access to a brush and paint. Monet, Manet, Singer-Sargeant, even the Australian Streeton had a go. It was the 19th century equivalent of an Instagram must. However the hero of Grand Canal painters was Canaletto. Giovanni Antonio Canal (I know right) was an 18th century painter who truly captured the scale, detail, colour and humanity of this location. His paintings and those of a similar ilk were snapped by the wealthy as they passed through on “The grand tour” They were souvenirs, the postcards and t-shirts of their time. Yet they were so much more. #hereismygo #letsmakelemonade
