The surgeon and the pen

“I was ostracized for my radical ideas…”

Ernest Codman

If you have ever stood at an operating table you will recognise the above image. It is a Codman skin marker, disposable, indelible, sterile and complete with a little ruler. It is in the room for nearly every operation in nearly every surgical specialty. Breast Endocrine Surgeons use them religiously. We couldn’t make an incision without them. Draw six incision lines and cut on the seventh is our motto. The Codman pen is named after Ernest Codman, Orthopaedic surgeon at MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital of anaesthetic fame) 1902-1914. Codman was a crusader of documenting the so called end results of operations. Codman kept little cards with details of all procedures performed at MGH. He was the father of peri-operative mortality. His system of cards was so popular that was forced to leave the MGH and start his own small hospital. Eventually all was forgiven. #ifeelhispain #letsmakelmonade
