“The best things in life are purchased…”
Marilyn Monroe
In 1950s Adelaide a favourite landmark was Thwaites corner. It was the site of one of Adelaide’s largest Menswear stores Thwaites, right on the busy corner of Rundle and Pulteney Streets. Sadly this business was unable to survive the new era of chain stores that emerged after the development of Rundle Mall a decade or so later. Despite being a CBD icon, Thwaites had quite a modest origin. This is a sketch of Welbourne Street in Mitcham. Central to this composition is one of our family’s favourite places, Stamps Restaurant. In 1894 Henry S Thwaites, Draper and outfitter, opened for business in the building that now houses Stamps. His slogan Men swear by Thwaites. It turns out that Urban sketchers struggling with perspective might do so as well. #themagicofmitcham #letsmakelemonade
