“If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know…”
Louis Armstrong
Recently I found myself in the men’s room of a McLaren Vale winery. I am sure this scenario will surprise no one, but what happened in that bathroom certainly surprised me. On the wall was a framed album cover. When I write, paint or operate, I love to listen to 50s and 60s jazz. Jazz focuses my attention, but doesn’t distract as I find other music can. It is also immune to unplanned singing from others. This record has now become a staple for me. Workin with the Miles Davis Quintet is part of a quartet of albums, Relaxin with…, Steamin with…, and Cookin with… It is hard to believe but all four albums were recorded over a single two day session in 1956, later to be released sequentially over 1960. The performances feature Miles Davis, but include contributions from two of my favourites, John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck. #sadlyjazzisnotforall #letsmakelemonade
