“The view to Sellicks”
句 山 1
In my mind one of the key mid 20th Century artists is Mark Rothko. I have been fortunate enough to see a number of his works up close and personal, and would love to see more. He is not for everyone, Melissa just smiles and stands quietly when I encounter a Rothko, it’s all too abstract for her. In fact Rothko loathed the term abstract to describe his art, or indeed any art. His goal was to provoke basic human emotions with paint. His art was to be experienced. It didn’t need description or explanation, which he felt was impossible due to the “poverty of language“. Rothko and other so-called abstract expressionists, in particular Pollock and de Kooning, subscribed to the notion of the “heresy of paraphrase“. This prioritised the actual artwork over the mutilation of the artwork by the description of it. #dontjudgeuntilyouseeone #letsmakelmonade
