This is the seed pod of Cupressus sempervirens. The species name derives from the phrase graceful figure of the beloved. Common names for this tree include the Mediterranean cypress, the Italian cypress, the Tuscan cypress, and the Persian cypress. In Australia we tend to favour Pencil pine, which seems very apt for this blog. In medicine this plant has seen action in treating fluid retention, haemorrhoids, acne and seborrheic eczema. It was an iconic subject for Vincent Van Gogh. It is the traditional wood used in harpsichord manufacture.
