“We take our bearings from others. To be sane is to be sociable…”
John Updike
How often do you take time to reflect upon the ball bearing? They are ancient machines, perhaps predating the wheel if you can interpret the cave paintings correctly. The ancient Egyptians depicted them on the walls of their temples and tombs. They may be the secret to constructing great pyramids. The modern ball bearing was patented by Welsh ironmonger Phillip Vaughan in 1794. Be careful with nomenclature, the term ball bearing can be used to describe both a ball and a bearing. We are here for the balls. A friend recently recommended the book Bomber Mafia. The Allied airforces thought the achilles heel of the Germans was ball bearings, and they tried to bomb the relevant factories out of existence. It turns out with a little Sumi ink and a ball bearing you can even make art. #rollingrollingrolling #letsmakelemonade
