Why ice cream trucks play Greensleeves

“Who does not tremble when he considers how to deal with his wife…”

Henry VII

Recently Melissa and I were exercising our beloved Penny along the Linear Park. A few jangled notes of Greensleeves reached our ears and Melissa instantly remarked “I could really go an ice cream” . Why does a 16th century English song, supposedly written about Anne Boleyn, cause such a Pavlovian response in my wife? Mr Whippy ice cream trucks first hit the streets of Australia in the 1950s, but were part of a bigger worldwide phenomenon. The founder of the company was a slightly eccentric Englishman of Italian extraction named Dominic Faccino. He clearly recognised the importance of a simple catchy tune in marketing. Faccino was keen on ice cream, but his true obsession was the life and times of King Henry VIII. So Greensleeves it was, despite the song having no link to ice cream. Indeed in America it was Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer and in France it was Frere Jacques. #nutsnochocolateforme #letsmakelemomade
