Urban sketching on steroids

“If it isn’t watercolour it’s a mural…”

Erich Segal

Large scale urban murals are having a moment. Around Adelaide they seem to be a compulsory part of any new apartment block. Some are great, some are okay and some are just weird. I’m on the fence about most of them, but fascinated about how such massive pieces of art are actually created. In turns out that there are five commonly employed mural art scaling techniques. The grid method – pretty self explanatory, but you still need a head for heights. The freehand method -for the confident and those with a uncanny sense of perspective. The projection method -limited to inside locations or those who prefer to work at night. The doodle grid method- a variation on the first method, employing wall features, windows, graffiti etc. for orientation. Finally the pounce method -paper plans, a piercing wheel and chalk dust. This last one is old school, dating to back medieval and renaissance times, being employed in vast cathedrals and the like. #notforme #letsmakelemonade
