These are my colours

“Colour is freed from objective context and becomes the subject itself…”

Clement Greenberg

Colour Field is a form of abstract painting that emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s. The three exemplar artists of Coeur Field painting are Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and Barnet Newman. Wilhelm De Koenig and Jackson Pollock make up the Famous Five of New York Abstract Expressionism, they are actually Colour Field adjacent, their style is more correctly referred to as Action painting. Newman is my favourite of these artists, and sadly the only one whose work I have never seen in gallery. Newman destroyed a lot of his pieces as his career moved along, so his paintings are scarce in the wild. His mature style incorporated vertical stripes, that he called zips. This is my homage to Newman’s 1952 work Onement V. like the double blues. #notforeverbody #letsmakelemonade
