More than little adults

“Children are the living messages that we send to a time that we will not see…”

John F Kennedy

Dr Willis Potts was a US Naval Surgeon stationed in Pearl Harbour the day the Japanese attacked. By the end of WW2 he had had enough of the carnage inflicted by Adults, and proceeded forward providing surgical care to children. One of the first things that Potts noticed was that many American Hospitals had great paediatric medical services, but few dedicated paediatric surgeons. Almost none were practicing outside of major institutions. Potts also recognised that the Blaloch,/Taussig/Thomas shunt had proved life giving for blue babies with congenital heart disease. This procedure was complex and technical, Potts was practical and pragmatic enough to know how few children would get access to this innovation. The Potts shunt connected the aorta directly to the adjacent pulmonary artery, it was much simpler and easier to master, something that could be adopted by a range of hospitals. The key to success was controlling the size of the incision in the vessels. Enter the Potts arterial scissors, still the weapon of choice for vascular surgeons working on arteries. #justright #letsmakelemonade
