Why all the fuss

The opening of Memorial Hospital, Adelaide

1921

The first mention of birthdays appeared in Ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE. They refer to large celebrations for the Pharaohs. In fact these were anniversaries of coronation dates, symbolic of the Pharaoh’s birth as a god. The Ancient Greeks introduced cakes as part of the celebrations. Moon shaped cakes were offered as a tribute annually to the lunar goddess Artemis. Her radiant beauty was symbolised by placing lit candles on top of the cakes. Ancient Rome was the first society to celebrate the birthdays of non religious figures, although only for men. The early Christians, despite the fuss of Christmas, despised individual birthday celebrations, considering them pagan and evil. It took centuries for them to come around. The full birthday package – party, cards, cakes, blowing out candles, songs and presents, emerged in Germany in the 18th century. #makeamesswearadress #letsmakelemonade
