“A garden is not a place, it’s a journey…”

Monty Don

The Adelaide Botanical Garden has always been a special place. Adjacent to the original Royal Adelaide Hospital, it has historic and personal importance to me. It was the location of the Adelaide Lunatic Asylum, and the first mortuary in the colony is still part of the gardens. As a surgical trainee at The Royal Adelaide Hospital in the 1980s, the garden was a place of retreat from the chaos of work, perhaps even for a quiet nap after a night on call. Over recent years the Hospital has gone, but the garden has remained relevant, reinventing itself as a culture and art venue. The recent Chihuly glass sculpture exhibition was highly successful, and the Botanic Garden is now a key venue for Illuminate Adelaide. The garden is being used and enjoyed day and night. I think an opportunity to visit at night is magical, irrespective of the wonderful spectacles on show. #adelaidelandmark #letsmakelemonade
