Richly arid

“Endless sand, endless possibility…”

Jean Baudrillard

As a newly minted surgeon a few decades ago, I did regular locums in Port Augusta. I actually learnt how to feel comfortable as an independent surgeon in the relative isolation. During these visits, the Australian Arid Land Botanic Gardens were a great place to have a break from life within the Hospital. In the late 1990s, the immature plantings were not that impressive. but the coffee in the cafe was excellent. The proposal for the gardens was finalized in 1981. The site and finding were secured in 1988, with the gates opening in 1996. In 2025 it is mature and well curated site. You can learn a lot here. On a recent visit I learnt that venomous Australian snakes are all related to Cobras rather than vipers, so common in the rest of the world. #aplacetowatchyourstep #letsmakelemonade
