“I call architecture frozen music…
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe”
In 2025 venues for surgery are functional, economical, formulaic and soul less. They are now clearly best described as operating rooms, but once they were true theatres. Before digital cameras, LED screens, robotics, AI and YouTube, you actually had to witness and experience surgery in order to learn about it. Operating theatres were mini stadia of drama and action, with roots in the Colosseum and medieval dissecting galleries. This is one of the most stunning operating rooms that I know of. It sits 12 stories high in the iconic Los Angeles General Hospital. This was a massive public hospital.built in the 1930s, with a distinctive Art Deco style and flair. More than just functional, it was a true architectural and design statement throughout. Sadly, In 1994 it fell victim to new earthquake codes, and it is now abandoned. It remains a stunning temple to a golden age of surgery, medical teaching and architecture. #checkthesoapoperaopeningscenes #letsmakelemonade
