The angle of the dangle

“I paint to get a grip on reality…”

Alberto Giacometi

When you hand a fountain pen to a novice they have three concerns. How hard to press to make it write, what angle to point the nib, and will they get ink on their fingers. Let’s deal with these. Most well tuned fountain pens will write under their own weight. Capillary action draws out ink, not pressure. They are fun to write with precisely because you don’t have to press or drag them. Second, if you do not touch the nib your fingers will remain clean. I often have ink on my hands due to ink refilling dramas or from playing about with my pens. You will not. Finally, the issue of the angle can be tricky, but the Sailor TUZU could be your solution. This entry level Japanese pen permits the user to rotate and lock the nib in 10 degree increments. This allows for wonky grippers, curious experimenters and awkward left-handers to feel comfortable and safe. #leftyoverhookers #letsmakelemonade.
