“Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros…”
Official Title of the French Open, The French Internationals of Roland Garros
Every June the French Open tennis tournament is played at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris. It is one of the sports sacred sites, the others being Arthur Ashe Stadium, Rod Laver Arena and of course Centre Court Wimbledon. There is pattern here that lead me to the assumption that Roland Garros was a legend of French tennis. I was wrong. Roland Garros was an aviator, His feats included the first crossing of the Mediterranean Sea by plane. During WW1 he was a French Fighter Ace, famed for developing a mechanism for machine guns to fire directly forward through the spinning blades of a wooden propeller. His best friend was Ettore Bugatti, and together they founded the Bugatti Car company. Garros’s views on or skills at tennis were never documented, but he has a very nice stadium honouring him. #Ijustassumed #letsmakelmonade
