Vocabulary of the Stylophile

“A collector of Fountain pens is often referred to by the noun pauper…”

Morpheus

Everyone likes to use fancy words, superior people’s words. Here is a small primer, should you want to talk fountain pens. The ferrule is both the top of the cap, and the bottom of the barrel, especially if it is separate piece or it is decorative. Clips when present, are described as folded, spring, ball or roller. A Visconti clip is called a bridge. If there is no clip then you may encounter a roll stop. The space between the tines of the nib is the slit, which leads down to the breather hole. The finned structure below the nib is the feed. Cap bands are self explanatory, and are described at part of the furniture, the metallic parts of the pen. If you choose to write with the cap on the back of the barrel, you have posted the pen with the associated risk of the pen becoming back weighted . A pen barrel is never described as plastic, it is acrylic resin, or precious resin if it is Mont Blanc. #mindyourlanguage #letsmakelmonade
