“…I think of Steely Dan being of its time, and may be impossible to separate from its time…”
Donald Fagen
The music of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker is many things – jazz, rock, R&B, folk. What it really represents is Poetry. Heavy with dark, cryptic references to drugs, alcohol, crime and sexual exploitation -set in both LA and New York. Steely Dan was essentially s studio duo, backed by the best sessional musicians of a generation. They released 9 original albums from 1972-2003. Live performances were exceptional, but in 2007 I saw them perform in Adelaide. A rare and special treat. Steely Dan is a reference to a steam powered dildo in Walter S Burrough’s beat generation novel the Naked Lunch. #reelingintheyears #letsmakelemonade
