Time to wrap up

“We wish to work in total freedom…”

Christo

Those of a certain age will have vague memories of black and white TV images showing a man trying to wrap the coastline of Sydney. Christo (Christo Vladimir Javacheff) died this month in New York. In 1969 Christo and his art partner/wife Jeanne Claude, were modestly known for their installation art. That year he was invited to give a lecture at the NSW Art Gallery. Why not make it a working trip? For 10 weeks 2.5km of Little Bay were covered in 92,900 square metres of fabric and 56.3km of rope. Christo was now world famous. This was the start of a series of major wrappings including the Berlin Reichstag, the Paris Pont Neuf, an entire Colorado valley and the gates of Central Park. In early 2020 his plan to wrap the L’Arc de Triomphe was delayed due to COVID19. It will still go ahead in September. At this stage I will stick to watercolours. #tietheknotstight #letsmakelemonade
