Unfinished business

“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on…”

FDR

Elizabeth Shoumatoff was a professional watercolour artist with a flair for portraits. One of her clients was reported to be a mistress of US President Franklin D Roosevelt. Introductions were made, and Shoumatoff was commissioned to paint the US leader, still a key figure in the latter stages of WW2. The sitting started around noon on April 12 1945. During this session FDR complained of sudden headache and collapsed soon after. The President had suffered a massive cerebral haemorrhage and died at 3.45pm that same day. The piece remains unfinished, but still captures a major moment in world history. #thelastfiresidechat #letsmakelemonade
