The church in the city, in the city of churches

“Experts built the Titanic, amateurs built the Ark…”

In 1840 the fledgling Catholic Church in South Australia began meeting in a private East Terrace home. By 1856 the Foundation stone of St Francis Xavier Cathedral had been laid and work on this Adelaide icon had commenced. Amazingly, the final elements of the bell tower from the orginal design by colonial architect Richard Lambert, were not completed until 1996. To be fair the bell tower was significantly damaged in the 1954 Adelaide earthquake, and plenty of European Cathedrals took much, much longer to complete. #cbdicon #letsmakelemonade
